As Director of the Stroke Program, Dr. Perkins participates in many nationwide clinical trials
targeted towards the treatment of Stroke, Alzheimer's Disease and Traumatic brain injury.
She has also expanded the breadth of the program by initiating her own research protocols involving
Stroke Prevention, Aphasia, Cerebral Vascular Reserve utilizing TCD as well as special protocols
involving MRI including functional MRI. Yearly, Dr. Perkins and her team attend the ASA
(American Stroke Association) meeting, as well as other stroke specific meetings to both
share her research interest and keep updated on the latest research advances in cerebrovascular
disease. Her work has been published in Stroke, as well as presented at the AAN (American Academy
Neurology) meeting.
As part of education, Dr. Perkins and her stroke team hold a stroke day yearly to help educate
the Stony Brook community. The team also conducts stroke screenings and promotes stroke awareness
to local community churches and schools. She has also visited local firehouses to educate the
paramedics/firefighters on first response to stroke treatment.
