Overview
The Continuing Day Treatment Program [CDTP] at Stony Brook University
Hospital provides ongoing psychiatric care for patients who do not require
hospitalization. This voluntary, time-limited, comprehensive program offers
an alternative to inpatient hospitalization for some patients and facilitates
transition from the inpatient setting to community living for others.
The program encourages patients to resolve problems and reach their individual
treatment goals. Patients participate in various activities such as group therapy,
skills development groups, daily living groups and activities therapy groups.
An interdisciplinary team of physicians, registered nurses, social workers
and occupational or recreational therapists provide caring assistance in a
therapeutic setting. Patients may also have contact with other professionals,
such as psychologists, dietitians and students training in various health
professions.
Goals
The Continuing Day Treatment Program helps maintain or enhance patients'
functioning and living skills. Staff members assist patients with community
living endeavors and help them develop self-awareness and self-esteem. This is
accomplished, in part, through exploration and development of patients' strengths
and interests.
The Continuing Day Treatment Program is structured to help those disabled by
mental illness to make informed choices about the community environments in which
they will be living, working and socializing; it also assists them in developing
the skills and supports needed to be successful and personally satisfied in those
environments.
Program
The Continuing Day Treatment Program meets Monday through Friday from
9 AM to 3 PM. Each patient is assigned a primary practitioner who is responsible
for coordinating that patient's care and implementing an individualized treatment
plan. Psychiatrists are available to see each patient, monitor medications, and
provide ongoing assessment of mental status.
Referrals
Any healthcare professional can make a referral to the Continuing Day
Treatment Program. The program is covered by Medicaid, partial Medicare and
some private companies.
